State of the Shrines 2020

So it’s that time of year again, and I’m doing my usual State of the Shrines update for this year. I posted a little short room tour to my youtube above, if you want to see how my room’s looking now and where all the shrines are in relation to each other. My window is on the east side of the house.

I really have a very simple set-up this year. I only have two active shrines: my Kemetic altar, and my Hellenic altar. I have a few more passive shrines, though, to Mary, Quan Yin, and Bast. So it’s very pared down right now, but I honestly am appreciating that a lot because I’m tired of having six different things going on. Now, I can focus on my Kemetic stuff, and do my Hellenic work for the full and dark moons, and keep that more household stuff going at the same time.

So, without further preamble, here are my current shrines in all their glory.

Another year begins

So, it’s been. A weird – but brilliant – start to the year. January and the last month of my Kemetic year was A Slog, and not just bc I spent most of it decluttering my room to a ridiculous extent. It was just one of those Big Years where I could tell Big Changes were coming. Personal stuff, as much as anything else. The thing that didn’t happen was rituals for Wep Ronpet, for a number of reasons, but that’s okay. That wasn’t necessarily the big priority this time, so.

I’m still figuring out a lot of what’s been going on, but one thing that is, is that I’m back on the House of Netjer forums, and intend to rejoin the House, which might come as a surprise to some of you, bc it sure as shit was to me too, but talking to another Sobek kid, Temi, reassured me that this was what Sobek wanted, so that’s where I am now.

It’s weird to feel like I can stop wandering now. Because that’s really all I’ve done for a decade. Wandered through Hekatean witchcraft, druidry, Buddhism, and god knows what else, following where Sobek led me, because that’s what I do. I never know the destination, just where I’ve been. This meandering encapsulated itself in an image I got during meditation of simply lying on His crocodilian back as He wades through the mud, forging the river in His wake, so I can see the path of the river, but not where we’re going. But I trust Him, so I let Him keep going.

But now I get to be still. No more wandering. My State of the Shrines post that’s coming up next will show you just how stable my path is at the moment. All I have to show now is my main Kemetic shrine, and my little Hellenic shrine. They’re the only two shrines I have up right now. I’ll also post my daily rites, because I have three versions that I’m using now, for various levels of ritual purity and time, and that more than anything helps me be consistent. I might not do the same thing every day, but I always turn up every day, and that’s what’s more important right now. Because I really haven’t had much of a daily practice for about two years, so it’s nice to be getting back to shrine every day.

I’m also going back to uni to do post-grad work and retrain as a librarian. Why? Because I’ve always wanted to, but it was never as much as a priority as it is now, and it might help me actually get a job and not just drift through life not getting anywhere. This definitely feels like a year of Doing Things, so I’m hoping that energy will carry through and things will genuinely change. I’m 36 now. I’m halfway through my life potentially. It’s time to get moving.

The other big life-changing news is that, after many years of being single, I am now in a relationship, thanks to Aphrodite. It’s still very new, even though we’ve been friends for a year now, because we were being Thick Oblivious Queers who were the last to figure out that we were in love, but if this is what the gods want, then I have to trust that it’s going to work out. I don’t want to write more on this yet, bc again, it’s very new and neither of us know what the fuck we’re doing, and also it’s long-distance bc ofc it is, so. But speaking as someone who had come to accept that I was going to be single for the rest of my life and I was okay with that, this is taking some time to adjust to. But they make me so happy that it’s worth it. ❤

So yeah. That’s my life right now. Big Changes. Also there are some things I can’t mention bc they are oathbound Sau things, but that’s the main gist of it. It’s been . A Time, and I’m so excited to see where this year takes me. Expect more posts as I get back into a more stable path.

State of the Shrines 2019

Okay, so before I start, I do want to say that this is the first time I’ve taken down shrines for this for privacy/oathbound reasons. I took down my Sau shrines, and I’ve removed some things from Hermes’ shrine bc they are sekrit and I don’t want to share them. So the bedroom overviews you’ll see are not quite how they are irl bc some shrines are gone, but that’s the basic plan of it. I feel like I’ve really focused down on only having shrines up that I’m actually using, so it’s a lot less now than what I used to have, but I’m happy with it. My focus this year is really just about magical practice and Quan Yin practice, so it does make it easier to maintain my shrines that way when I don’t need so many of them.

Wep Ronpet this year though was a bit of a wipe out. I had menstruation to deal with, which meant my statue washing and preparations were thrown off schedule, and I had a migraine that also delayed me doing anything in terms of ritual, so nothing really happened. But I did get my statues washed, which was good. I usually do all of them if I have time, but this time, I just did my Sobek shrine statues, and gave them all a good wash, as well as cleaning all the shrines.

But that’s life, really, so. I’ll give you the bedroom overview pics first, then we’ll dive into the shrine tours. ❤

Bedroom Shrines Update #2

Since my last State of the Shrines post has been making the rounds on tumblr recently, I thought I’d post some more photos of what I’ve done in my room now. I’ve got most of the work done, bar one Ivar shelf in the corner, and the bookshelves over the bed, and hanging a few final pieces (like picture frames etc), and then it’ll be done. So this isn’t an official State of the Shrines for 2018 yet, but it’s progress. I’ll do a proper one once everything’s done, bc there are a few shrines I’m planning for the bookshelves so it’s not done until they’re up there.

Be aware that everything is still a work in progress, and I’m still figuring out how I want everything to be, so things may not stay this way as I finish everything off, but it’s working for now. I may still decide to redo things, or change things around, and I’m still sorting out how I want the altar by the window to function, since both Mary and Aphrodite’s shrines are going to be on the bookshelves. So we’ll see how that one settles in. So yeah, there are a few odd statues that are just hanging around, not quite in the right place yet, but for the most part, it’s working for me.

I have a lot of photos, so bear with me, but see under the cut for what I’ve got so far. ❤

Water Purifications

In Quanyin practice on Friday, Quanyin suggested we should do water purifications over the weekend, and as the dark moon is tonight, that seemed entirely appropriate. I had planned to write a specific ritual for this purpose, but in the end, I adlibbed it. Sekhmet was an adlib, too, but I saw Her statue there on the windowsill in the bathroom, and She wanted to be included. So in its own way, I managed to purify with water, salt, incense, and fire (we have solar hot water). I could very much feel Their presence as I stood before Them, and I let my intuition guide me about how to make it work, and what I wanted to do.

I did the formal ritual stuff first, then got in the shower, where there was a moment where Sobek, Sekhmet, and Bast were all pouring water over my head. I finished it off with a salt scrub.

I want to do a longer write-up of this later, but I wanted to record this little bit while it’s fresh in my mind. Now I can go and do the deipnon. ❤

Shrine Updates, August 2017

So it’s been a bit of a quiet month, but that’s okay. There’s been a lot of prep work and putting things into place and sorting things out and trying some other things out, too. The last two days have been very Spring-like: warm and sunny and nice. I got into a bit of a cleaning mood, and have spent the time redoing my shrines, and my spaces, doing a little decluttering, and moving a few things around so they work better for me. I think I’ve also decided on at least one piece of fiction to include in the anthology, it will just need some work and editing and world-building first.

There’s a part of me that just wants to ramble on about the shrines, but honestly, I feel like I’ve written too much about them and I’d just be repeating myself. But I made some videos, so take a look at them, and I’ll ramble about them just a little.

The shrines have settled in

Wesir all wrapped and ready for the Mysteries.

So I wrote a while back about changing the shrines around, but I didn’t want to post about them until they’d settled in. Sometimes, new shrine arrangements need time for me to tweak them, to make sure they are right. Big changes, too, are ones I feel I need to sit with, in case I decide to change them back. So I have given myself a week or so to tweak and sit and practice and figure out what I need to do to make them right, and I think I’m done, for the moment. Shrines always change, they never stay the same, so this is no more permanent than my other shrines. It’s just a reflection of where I am in my path right now.

I’ve also just got around to wrapping my statue of Wesir. It’s a bit later than I normally do it, given there’s only a week to go. But I noticed the lack of His presence once it was done. I do miss Him during this time, but it’s never permanent.

One thing I did achieve today was to go back through the Daybook and pick out all the Mysteries of Wesir-related festivals, and begin compiling something for that. I wanted a more complete picture than the eight-day one I’ve been working with, and going by the dates, I’m actually a few weeks early with mine if I schedule it on May 1, so that’ll be something to think about, whether I keep the May 1 start date, or keep the Kemetic dates instead.

I wouldn’t mind moving it so much. It would give me a bit of breathing space to do a more Hekate-focused May 1 High Day rite without it crashing into the Mysteries. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I would appreciate that, since I wouldn’t need to try to do too many things at once. So that’s definitely on the cards, but nothing’s been decided yet.

Noumenia for April

Noumenia April 2016

…I may move the pot of brushes next time. *makes note*

GFDI it is April, not March. I am terrible at this tonight. My brain is overtired, and I need to go to bed soon. Anyway. Noumenia is done. Offered rum, and made an extra libation to Hermes. My mother is travelling back from overseas in a few hours, and I’ve had a little safe travel spell going since she left. So I finished it off tonight, and hopefully, Hermes will take care of them all and she’ll be back home safely.

Also, this desk makes a great altar, ngl. There’s enough space for everything, and for a small omen at the bottom. There’s room to place the incense next to the window, so it can not be always in my face. Should have thought of that before I burnt four tiny sticks of incense on top of a jar right next to me. I am terrible sometimes. I am probably going to give myself a migraine over this, I can feel it coming on. If I could get frankincense, myrrh, and rosemary in a Japanese incense form, I wouldn’t need to worry about this, but oh well.

Anyway. We’ve had storms tonight, and my cat has not appreciated this. She was crying outside the parents’ bedroom door halfway through the ritual, so I had to take a moment to corral her into my room. Because of the weather, I’ll pour out the offering tomorrow. And now I am going to post this and head to bed because I am tired af. But noumenia is done for another month, and I feel good.

Shrine Kit – Greek God Poseidon – Sea Chest, Artwork, Prayer Beads – Gold and Blue

I was actually going to sell the beads separately, but I felt it made more sense to sell them all together, which is why the second image doesn’t include the beads. This is for those who have had better experiences with Poseidon than I have. But it is a beautiful kit, and would make for an excellent mini altar set-up for those with little space, or to take with you. Either the chest, or the art, could sit on a desk at work without drawing undue attention to themselves as pagan shrines.

This is a mini devotional shrine kit for the Greek God Poseidon.

The small papier mache treasure chest is painted with gold acrylic paint, and decorative paper has been used to embelish the box. It has a layer of varnish to protect it from damage.

The 4in x 4in canvsas is a paper art piece made with one of the same pieces of decorative paper used for the chest. This piece is titled, ‘The Gates of Poseidon’.

The prayer beads are made with turquoise, sodalite, and black onyx, with a silver dolphin charm. The beads were chosen to represent the colours of a stormy sea, and are beaded together semi-randomly.

In the chest, there is a small ceramic offering dish, a tealight, and two frankincense incense cones. There is enough room to fit the prayer beads inside, as well as any other little trinkets you might want to include.

The entire kit contains:
– one painted and embellished papier mache chest
– one 4in x 4in canvas paper art
– one set of prayer beads
– one ceramic offering dish
– one tealight
– frankincense incense cones

Everything will be packaged securely to prevent damage during shipping.

If you are interested in purchasing this shrine kit, please check out the listing on Etsy.

I have been making all the beads

Apparently it is prayer bead making season. I’ve made all of the above over the past fortnight or so. Which is good, I guess, because I sort of felt like I’d been making all the other things, and didn’t have enough prayer beads around. So I made some. Quite a lot.

The left photo shows prayer beads for Poseidon, Mars the Centurion, Hephaistos, the Dark Goddess (whoever She is), two for Isis, two for Heru, and one for Sobek. The set for Mars followed His guidelines for it. It had to have 100 beads for 100 soldiers, plus one for Himself as their centurion, and the red tassle, which echoed the helmet of a Roman soldier. Poseidon’s set was made with the sense of capturing the colours of the stormy sea; it has an unofficial title of the Rage of Poseidon.

The set made for the Dark Goddess wasn’t a set I was planning to make, but I found the beads all together in a little bag in my bead box, and wondered who I’d planned to make it for onceuponatime. I decided to string them anyway and not waste them, and the energy I got suggested a name of The Dark Goddess, whoever She is. She may be Hekate, or Kali, or the Morrigan, or some sort of darker death deity energy like that. I have no idea who. But that’s the perception I got as I was making it.

The second photo shows some of the more recent creations. With the exception of the rose quartz set, the other beads are for Sobek. The rose quartz beads were guided by Hekate; She said it is a set for healing, love, and peace. It is made with rose quartz and amethyst.

The other sets for Sobek are experiments, playing around with structures that could be used for a set prayer. I had a request for something like this over at Per Sebek, and thought I’d have a go and see what I could come up with. I wrote a prayer that might be used with the beads last week, and this was me trying to design some beads to go with it. I think I’ll refrain from listing those Sobek beads just yet, while I iron out the kinks in the prayer and how to use them, but they will turn up eventually. I want to spend some time using them myself, just to see how well it works, and figure out the best way to format the prayer, and make any tweaks to it, before I decide how I’m going to include it, and print it it out. I’ll probably post some more about that as I work on it, but that’s the plan, to have a set of beads for Sobek that go with a set prayer, if that’s the sort of thing you work well with.

Anyway, I have more things to do, and I want to get some of those beads listed this weekend, just so they’re up. I have a few things to retake photos of, but other than that, it’s a matter of sitting down and getting the work done.
