30 Days of Sobek: Day 17 – How Sobek Relates To Other Gods and Pantheons

Well, Sobek did foster me off to Hekate for a year, so…

Which turned into five years and counting and oh, look, you’re Hekate’s witch now, so this is fine. But I digress.

Foreign Gods

Sobek’s connections to other pantheons are mostly through the Roman pantheon, iirc. Oh, and the Greek. He was seen as Helios by the Greeks, and I believe the Romans equated Him with Mars, but don’t quote me on that. Those are the connections I’m most aware of right now.

As for modern times, He seems to get on well with other gods. Mars, I can attest to, and Hekate. Sobek and Mars tend to have a similar sort of energy, and to be honest, that historical connection makes more sense to me than Sobek=Helios, but perhaps those who know Sobek-Ra can see Sobek=Helios more easily than I can.

Sobek’s a very laid-back sort of god, and I’d argue He’d get on well with many gods, though I haven’t tried this to find out. I get the impression that if it’s a god who’s going to help you, He’ll go along with it. This is basically why He gave me to Hekate, there were things only She could teach me.

Egyptian Gods

This feels like a repeat of the gods they’re related to question, but honestly, I’ve not yet had any experiences with Him and other Egyptian gods that didn’t go well. If anything, my aversion to Hethert is on me, not Him, so that’s something I need to work on. But yeah, even with Set, things seem to be fine. He’s a pretty chill god, so He tends to get on with other gods pretty well. But this is just my limited experience, so others might have a different experience of Him and other gods that I don’t have.

But anyway. I think that’s about it for this one. I’d be interested to know what other devotees have experienced in terms of His relationships with other gods.

Wep Ronpet beckons again

What happens when I try to find something to do with Sobek's (broken off) headgear to make this Herubirb into a Sobek-Heru birbcroc.

What happens when I try to find something to do with Sobek’s (broken off) headgear to make this Herubirb into a Sobek-Heru birbcroc.

I swear it always creeps up on me, even though I know it’s coming. But anyway. It is nearly Wep Ronpet, and I am in my final week of preparation before the epagomenal days begin on Saturday. Saturday? *checks* Friday! They begin on Friday! I haven’t set up the shrine for it yet, but I’ll probably do that tomorrow, once I fish out all the little god statues I need from the box I am pretty sure they are in somewhere.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon cleaning all the shrines and redressing them. There’s an added layer of preparing because Friday is also the Deipnon, so. Doing my cleaning now seems, well. It seems to work for me. Plus, I’d rather do it today when it’s cool than wait till later when it’s going to get hot. Cleaning shrines in the heat is no fun, let me tell you.

I tried to do a room/shrine tour thing because taking +elebenty photos is tiring, but it didn’t quite work out, so. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can get something to post for you so you can see how they look now. I have been re-evaluating them all and cleaning them and making sure they are the shrines I really need, and I have put some things away, and changed some altar cloths, and moved some statues around. So it’s looking pretty good now. I have the Shedety shrine, the witchcraft shrine, the lararium, the Goddess shrine, the Masrai shrine, and the ancestor shrine for Bowie and the queer ancestors. …That seems like a lot. And it probably is, for the space I have. Anyway.

For now, have this picture of my Herubirb and His shiny new headgear. One of my Sobek statues arrived with His hat broken off, so once I gave up trying to keep gluing it back on (because resin hates glue apparently), I wasn’t sure what else to do with it. So in the middle of cleaning Heru up, I decided to see if Sobek’s hat would fit on Heru’s head, with the addition of a bit of ribbon and some blutac for stick and cushioning. And, well. It works. Enough for my purposes, even if the shadows now make Him look like an angry Herubirb. XD *pets Him*

I have been making all the beads

Apparently it is prayer bead making season. I’ve made all of the above over the past fortnight or so. Which is good, I guess, because I sort of felt like I’d been making all the other things, and didn’t have enough prayer beads around. So I made some. Quite a lot.

The left photo shows prayer beads for Poseidon, Mars the Centurion, Hephaistos, the Dark Goddess (whoever She is), two for Isis, two for Heru, and one for Sobek. The set for Mars followed His guidelines for it. It had to have 100 beads for 100 soldiers, plus one for Himself as their centurion, and the red tassle, which echoed the helmet of a Roman soldier. Poseidon’s set was made with the sense of capturing the colours of the stormy sea; it has an unofficial title of the Rage of Poseidon.

The set made for the Dark Goddess wasn’t a set I was planning to make, but I found the beads all together in a little bag in my bead box, and wondered who I’d planned to make it for onceuponatime. I decided to string them anyway and not waste them, and the energy I got suggested a name of The Dark Goddess, whoever She is. She may be Hekate, or Kali, or the Morrigan, or some sort of darker death deity energy like that. I have no idea who. But that’s the perception I got as I was making it.

The second photo shows some of the more recent creations. With the exception of the rose quartz set, the other beads are for Sobek. The rose quartz beads were guided by Hekate; She said it is a set for healing, love, and peace. It is made with rose quartz and amethyst.

The other sets for Sobek are experiments, playing around with structures that could be used for a set prayer. I had a request for something like this over at Per Sebek, and thought I’d have a go and see what I could come up with. I wrote a prayer that might be used with the beads last week, and this was me trying to design some beads to go with it. I think I’ll refrain from listing those Sobek beads just yet, while I iron out the kinks in the prayer and how to use them, but they will turn up eventually. I want to spend some time using them myself, just to see how well it works, and figure out the best way to format the prayer, and make any tweaks to it, before I decide how I’m going to include it, and print it it out. I’ll probably post some more about that as I work on it, but that’s the plan, to have a set of beads for Sobek that go with a set prayer, if that’s the sort of thing you work well with.

Anyway, I have more things to do, and I want to get some of those beads listed this weekend, just so they’re up. I have a few things to retake photos of, but other than that, it’s a matter of sitting down and getting the work done.
