Shrine Updates, August 2017

So it’s been a bit of a quiet month, but that’s okay. There’s been a lot of prep work and putting things into place and sorting things out and trying some other things out, too. The last two days have been very Spring-like: warm and sunny and nice. I got into a bit of a cleaning mood, and have spent the time redoing my shrines, and my spaces, doing a little decluttering, and moving a few things around so they work better for me. I think I’ve also decided on at least one piece of fiction to include in the anthology, it will just need some work and editing and world-building first.

There’s a part of me that just wants to ramble on about the shrines, but honestly, I feel like I’ve written too much about them and I’d just be repeating myself. But I made some videos, so take a look at them, and I’ll ramble about them just a little.

Sobek devotional plans

So I think I’ve narrowed down what I am going to submit, so that’s nice. I’m trying not to fill it with too much of my own work, and make room for other people to submit stuff, which you totally should do. Don’t leave it all to me, it will not be a good book if it’s just me. XD

But I know I want to put in the Sobek rosary, the morning ritual I do, one of the awakening hymns and one of the contemplative hymns, maybe the Sobek execration rite, a ritual for Sobek’s birthday?, some sort of essay on idk me and Sobek and regional cultus and maybe one on Sobek and Renenutet or something else idk. I sort of want one personal one and one more academic one. Then a short story of some sort. I’m torn between myth retelling or just priest of Sobek (ancient or modern idk yet), or both idk. But there will be at least one short story from me. I think I want to add at least one of my artworks, too.

I know it sounds like a lot, but I sort of want to cover as much ground as I can, just because I don’t know what else will come in. So that’s my part done. And I’m glad to have a more solid idea of what I want to submit, because I had no idea for a long time. I have too much material to potentially draw from. XD I’m hoping some of you reading this are working on submissions, too, because I’d love to publish them in the anthology as well. DO IT. 😀 And yes, I am going to spam you a lot about this for the rest of the year, I want this to work, dammit. SEND ME THINGS. 😀

30 Days of Sobek Devotion: Day 1 – Basic Introduction

So, it is June 1, and that means it’s only 30 days until the Sobek devotional opens for submissions! This is your ONE MONTH reminder! Get your submissions ready so we can make this thing happen! 😀

All the details are here, please check it out to see what we’re looking for, and if you have any questions or want to run something by me, hit me up at sobekdevotionalATgmail.com tyvm! ❤

So, to give you all a bit of inspiration, and to maybe introduce anyone to Sobek who doesn’t know much about Him, June is going to be Sobek Devotional Meme Month, since I am finally tackling that 30 days of deity devotion meme that’s been floating around the place for years now. I’ll post a master list in a while (eta: it is here!), but here’s today’s post, day 1, a basic introduction to Sobek. It summarises some of what I’m going to talk about over the month ahead. Hopefully, these 30 days of posts will give you a deeper insight into Sobek and my relationship with Him, and maybe inspire you to go and meet Him yourself.

It’s been a quiet month

I had a lot of plans for May in terms of spiritual retreat and ritual and other things, but the gods had other plans. Wesir basically told me to rest, so that’s what I did. The only ritual I’ve done this month is Quanyin practice.

But it was nice to just take a break from everything and take a moment to breathe and figure out what I need to do next. I didn’t do as much spiritual work as I’d planned, but I did some, and I’ve been pondering where to go next with my monastic stuff, and my witchcraft, including looking for local groups that might be willing to teach me. Hekate’s been the big push behind this, but so much of the reason for that is not something that’s ready to talk about just yet.

The Sobek Devotional opens for submissions in July, so I’ve been mentally preparing for that, too. I thought I might do the 30 days of devotion meme for Sobek through June to get my inspiration flowing, and to maybe inspire other people, too. I’ve been making notes on a 51 page article about the Book of the Faiyum, so this is the sort of effort I’m going to for this adorable god and His not-very-extensive collection of surviving myths that I need to collate for Day 4 omg. (If someone could publish an English translation of that book so I could read the whole thing, rather than just snippets, that would be amazing. But I doubt that will ever happen because Sobek doesn’t get a lot of research energy boooo.)

That said, even the snippets are beginning to make me re-evaluate what this practice is going to look like, and what’s important to preserve, so expect more ponderings on that front in the future, when I ramble on about how to build regional cultus based on sketchy information and my intuition. :D?

Anyway. That’s really all I wanted to say for now. I have some posts to write, and some research to finish, so look forward to a month of Sobek posts, and get your submissions for the Sobek devotional ready. If you want to chat about the devotional and any possible submissions, email sobekdevotionalATgmail.com and we can chat about it.

Wep Ronpet beckons again

What happens when I try to find something to do with Sobek's (broken off) headgear to make this Herubirb into a Sobek-Heru birbcroc.

What happens when I try to find something to do with Sobek’s (broken off) headgear to make this Herubirb into a Sobek-Heru birbcroc.

I swear it always creeps up on me, even though I know it’s coming. But anyway. It is nearly Wep Ronpet, and I am in my final week of preparation before the epagomenal days begin on Saturday. Saturday? *checks* Friday! They begin on Friday! I haven’t set up the shrine for it yet, but I’ll probably do that tomorrow, once I fish out all the little god statues I need from the box I am pretty sure they are in somewhere.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon cleaning all the shrines and redressing them. There’s an added layer of preparing because Friday is also the Deipnon, so. Doing my cleaning now seems, well. It seems to work for me. Plus, I’d rather do it today when it’s cool than wait till later when it’s going to get hot. Cleaning shrines in the heat is no fun, let me tell you.

I tried to do a room/shrine tour thing because taking +elebenty photos is tiring, but it didn’t quite work out, so. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can get something to post for you so you can see how they look now. I have been re-evaluating them all and cleaning them and making sure they are the shrines I really need, and I have put some things away, and changed some altar cloths, and moved some statues around. So it’s looking pretty good now. I have the Shedety shrine, the witchcraft shrine, the lararium, the Goddess shrine, the Masrai shrine, and the ancestor shrine for Bowie and the queer ancestors. …That seems like a lot. And it probably is, for the space I have. Anyway.

For now, have this picture of my Herubirb and His shiny new headgear. One of my Sobek statues arrived with His hat broken off, so once I gave up trying to keep gluing it back on (because resin hates glue apparently), I wasn’t sure what else to do with it. So in the middle of cleaning Heru up, I decided to see if Sobek’s hat would fit on Heru’s head, with the addition of a bit of ribbon and some blutac for stick and cushioning. And, well. It works. Enough for my purposes, even if the shadows now make Him look like an angry Herubirb. XD *pets Him*

Sobek devotional outline – now taking requests!

Hello! So I have been working on a possible sketchy draft outline for what I might include in this Sobek devotional. I want it to be more than just a collection of prayers and rituals. I want it to include things like, how to build a relationship with Him, and how to even build a regional cultus when all you have is one book, and a sketchy handful of articles. Something that explores and talks about how I built my practice up to where it is now.

IDK if that’s of any interest to anyone else, but IDK if there’s much else available for anyone else looking to build regional cultus, and even just to build a relationship with Sobek. And I keep talking about Sobek, like it’s just Him, but it’s really not. It’s Sobek and Heru and Isis and Renenutet and Wesir and Nit and it’s all a bit messy. On which, more later.

And, tbh, if I’m going to write a book like that, I feel like I should make sure I’m including all the things people would actually find useful? I’m never entirely sure what people want to know about worshipping Sobek until they ask, with the general exceptions of ‘how do I even start’ and ‘offerings???’, so getting any feedback on that would be great.

I’ll put my draft, definitely not set in stone, outline below the cut. Feel free to make suggestions or tear it apart or whatever. And feel free to pass it on to interested parties, if you know of anyone who’d be interested in a Sobek devotional like this. I may also put in a final section for other people’s devotional works, if that even wants to be a thing, just because, well. Other people worship Sobek as well, and this might be easier than trying to crowd-source enough material for an entire devotional anthology without resorting to filling half of it with my own stuff. But like I said, so much of this is a sketchy draft outline and honing it down into something I can begin to work on is the next step.
